How much does a pop-up store cost in 2026?
Rent, production, installation, operation: the real budget grid, line by line, from people who build them.
A complete pop-up store costs between €15,000 and €150,000 depending on the location, the duration and the level of production: allow €15,000 to €35,000 for a simple 2 to 4 week operation, €40,000 to €80,000 for a bespoke pop-up in a premium location, and over €100,000 for a temporary flagship lasting several months. Here is the detail line by line, including the items that articles written by venue rental platforms systematically leave out.
The full budget, line by line
| Item | Range | Share of budget |
|---|---|---|
| Venue rental (4 weeks, Paris, 30-50 m²) | €6,000 to €25,000 | 25-35% |
| Concept & design (concept, 3D, technical drawings) | €3,000 to €15,000 | 8-12% |
| Production of furniture and sets | €8,000 to €60,000 | 25-40% |
| Installation & take-down (transport, assembly, removal) | €3,000 to €15,000 | 8-12% |
| Operation (staff, till, insurance, energy) | €4,000 to €20,000 | 10-15% |
| Communication & launch | €2,000 to €15,000 | 5-15% |
1. The venue: the most visible item, not always the biggest
In Paris, a 30 to 50 m² unit rents for between €1,500 and €6,000 a week depending on the neighbourhood, with peaks above €10,000 a week in the Marais during Fashion Week. In a department store, the model is different: commission on sales (25 to 40%) rather than fixed rent, which reduces the cash-flow risk. The detail of the model is on our corner and shop-in-shop page. In shopping centres, kiosks are negotiated with the retail landlord's specialty leasing department.
Legally, a short occupation most often goes through a short-term lease (bail dérogatoire), limited to three years by article L145-5 of the French Commercial Code. This is what lets you avoid the standard commercial lease, and what explains why an owner will sometimes refuse a duration that would commit them too far.
2. Production: the item everyone underestimates
It is the great absentee of budget guides written by rental platforms, and for good reason: it is not their trade. Yet production is what makes the difference between a real brand space and a white unit with stickers:
- Light fit-out (rented furniture, print, paint): €5,000 to €15,000
- Part bespoke (counter and key pieces made to order, the rest standard): €15,000 to €35,000
- Fully bespoke (a whole world made to order: furniture, sets, signage, neon): €35,000 to €80,000+
A key point: well-designed bespoke furniture is reusable over 3 to 5 operations. If you are planning a tour or several pop-ups a year, think in cost per activation, not purchase cost. That is the subject of our pop-up store manufacturer page.
One more item belongs here, invisible on a joiner's quote: compliance. In premises open to the public, materials must meet reaction-to-fire requirements, and the installation goes before an inspection body (bureau de contrôle). These constraints are dealt with at the drawing stage. Discovered at installation, they are paid for in remakes and lost days.
3. Installation: night costs more than day
At street level, assembly takes 1 to 3 working days. In a department store, everything happens at night, through the loading bays, with safety sign-off. It costs more and cannot be improvised. Also plan for take-down and reinstatement of the premises, which are contractually your responsibility.
4. Operation: the budget that runs every day you are open
Sales staff (€200 to €350 per day per person), till and payment methods, public liability and property damage insurance, electricity, cleaning, consumables. Over a month of opening, this item often exceeds the design budget.
How much does a "boutique éphémère" cost?
Exactly the same: "boutique éphémère" and "magasin éphémère" are the French terms for what marketing calls a pop-up store. The ranges above apply as they stand. The only nuance is one of usage: in France people tend to say boutique éphémère when the aim is to sell over several weeks, and pop-up when the operation is short and event-led. The budget depends on the floor area, the duration and the level of production, not on the word chosen.
How much does a stand or kiosk in a shopping centre cost?
It is the cheapest format to get into. Allow €8,000 to €25,000 of production for a kiosk in the mall, plus the occupation fee, negotiated by the week or the month with the landlord's specialty leasing department: Apsys, Klépierre, Unibail, Mercialys.
Two extra costs specific to this format, often discovered too late: the kiosk is seen from all sides, so there is no back to skimp on; and the circulation and evacuation constraints in the mall are stricter than in a store, which weighs on the design and the materials. The detail is on our shopping centre pop-up page.
Three scenarios to place yourself
- Market test for a brand born online, about €20,000: 2 weeks in the 11th arrondissement, light fit-out with a few made-to-order pieces, founders on the floor plus one salesperson.
- Premium product launch, about €60,000: 4 weeks in the Marais, part bespoke, scenography designed for images, opening event.
- Department store corner, €40,000 to €90,000: production to the store's specifications, night assembly, 2 to 6 months of operation on commission.
These ranges are ours, not market averages. To see what these formats look like in practice, our projects are published with their real site photos: the 900.care kiosk at the Forum des Halles for the shopping centre footfall format, the Birkenstock corner at Galeries Lafayette Haussmann for the department store, the C'est mon Donuts store for the move from temporary to permanent. Not recycled press photos: ours.
How to cut the budget without killing the experience
- Shift the dates: the same unit costs 30 to 50% less outside peak periods (Fashion Week, Christmas).
- Design for reuse: spread the cost of production over several operations.
- Choose the department store for a first time: commission replaces rent, footfall is guaranteed.
- Concentrate the budget on 1 or 2 spectacular elements (the window, the counter) rather than spreading it thin.
- Embrace reuse: restyling salvaged display cases costs a fraction of new, and the result stands comparison when the choices are consistent.
What next
If the budget is framed, the rest is method: opening your first pop-up store, step by step. If you want a costing for your project rather than a range, here is how we work, and the contact form asks for the three pieces of information that let us give a useful answer: the format, the period and the rough size of the budget.
